Engagement & Couples Session Tips
Whenever couples ask me what to wear, I always advise to bring an outfit change. Obviously wear whatever makes YOU the most comfortable, but I will usually suggest arriving in a "glam" look and then halfway through changing into a casual, more "typical you" outfit. That way you have the best of both worlds! If it's a new outfit, take it for a test spin before and make sure it's something you are truly comfortable in! The last thing you want is to feel like you're picking at your clothes the whole time.
Plan on getting a hair and makeup trial before your big day? Schedule it the morning of your engagement session and get the most out of it!!
Use the time as a chance to vibe with your photographer, hang out together and really get to know each other. Think of it as a great way to trial run and make sure you click before the big day.
Have a specific look in mind? Create a Pinterest board to share with your photographer!! It's a great way to help them see what you're visualizing for the session. Let them know if you have any particular poses or shots that are must haves for you!
Don't be afraid to incorporate "unique" elements from your relationship that make it so special, especially when choosing the location! Yes, that local park will absolutely look stunning as your background, but stop and consider other options too. Did you guys meet at McDonalds? Maybe you two love hanging out at the local watering hole together. Or maybe you two are avid hikers and love to explore nature. Whatever it is - let your photographer know!! Those special little quirks can honestly turn into some of the best and most memorable photos from the day! Do something that really reflects your special connection with each other.
Make a day out of it! Have your engagement session be part of a day-long date with your significant other. This gives you two a chance to get into that romantic mindset first. Maybe grab coffee - or a mimosa or two! ;) - at your favorite spot and ask your photographer to meet you there before switching up locations. This also ensures plenty of time for photos without feeling rushed!
When in doubt, kiss!! It's no secret that being in front of the camera can be extremely intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! Choose a photographer that makes you feel comfortable and can help you with natural posing and prompts. And when in doubt and feeling super awkward? Give your partner a kiss! It's a great way to loosen up and forget that camera is even there.
My golden rule for ANY couples shoot?? Play the game of electricity. Yep, you read that right. Pretend like you're 5 again and you're playing a game of electricity where you have to be touching each other at all times!! It may feel silly at first, but it's a great way to really show the connection between you two in portraits.
